Give IRA Assets
Donating retirement assets such as profit-sharing plans, stock bonus plans, 401(k) plans and IRAs often makes financial sense. These assets can be among your most highly taxed assets, subject to both estate taxes and income taxes. Giving these as a gift to the YMCA Foundation eliminates these issues. Generally there is no need for an attorney to accomplish this. Simply name the YMCA Foundation of Southern Arizona as a beneficiary with the plan's beneficiary designation form. You can choose to designate a specific dollar amount or a percentage, based on what works best for your situation.
Charitable Gift Annuity
A charitable Gift Annuity is a contract in which the YMCA Foundation agrees to pay you a fixed amount annually for your lifetime in exchange for a gift. The rate of return is based on age (the older you are the higher the payments will be). We use the rates provided by the American Council on Gift Annuities. You can check the current rates and read more about Gift Annuities by going to their website.
Wills and Bequests
Many Y supporters include the YMCA Foundation of Tucson as a beneficiary in their wills. The federal government encourages these gifts by allowing an unlimited estate tax charitable deduction. There are three options when making a bequest. You can choose to make a specific bequest, in which the Foundation gets a specific dollar amount, percentage or property. You could also grant a residual bequest, where the YMCA receives the remainder of your estate after all other beneficiaries have been paid. You may also make a contingent bequest. In this scenario the Foundation only receives your gift if certain conditions are met. For example, you might say that the Foundation is a beneficiary only if you have no surviving close family members.
Gifts of Life Insurance
Some of our supporters purchased life insurance years ago but, due to a change in circumstances, they no longer need it. If you are in that situation we ask you to consider donating your policy to the Y. You can claim a charitable deduction for the policy's cash surrender value, and the proceeds are completely removed from your estate. Another option would be to add the YMCA Foundation to your policy as a beneficiary.
Charitable Trusts
A charitable trust is created by transferring assets to a trust that pays you and/or another beneficiary income for life. At the end of the trust the remaining assets are transferred to the YMCA Foundation. You can choose to set up a charitable remainder annuity trust (you are paid a fixed amount annually, regardless of the trusts current value) or a charitable remainder unitrust (you are paid a percentage of the trusts value annually, which can go up or down depending on the trust's current value).
Need Help Planning?
Few of us relish the idea of writing an estate plan, but it is a necessary step to ensure that your wishes are carried out and that your family is taken care of. If you would like, the YMCA Foundation of Southern Arizona can send you a free Estate Planning Kit. This kit includes information to help protect your family from needless taxes, fees, delays and additional stress. Although this kit is not a substitute for legal advice, it can be a good first step towards estate and retirement planning. To receive a kit just call Kerry Dufour at (520) 623-5511 extension 256, or send her an email.

Additionally, the YMCA Foundation, in collaboration with the Community Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity Tucson, Literacy Volunteers of Tucson and the Pima Community College Foundation present a series of "Write a Will" workshops during March of each year. Each workshop features estate planning attorneys who will explain the legal aspects of a will, along with ways to support your favorite charities with legacy gifts. If you would like an invitation to the next workshop series, please contact us.
Thank you very much for considering a legacy gift to the YMCA Foundation of Southern Arizona.
